Preserving My History - Through Honors in the Performing Arts:

By Claudeen Benoit

Our Story

In honoring and preserving my history, I want to reflect on some of the incredible opportunities and recognitions that have shaped my path in the performing arts. From scholarships to conservatory training, each moment has left a lasting impact on my artistry and career.

One of the most impactful honors of my career  was receiving the Princess Grace Scholarship, awarded in support of my attendance at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts (AADA).

The Price Grace Foundation Scholarship:

Princess Grace began her professional acting journey at the age of 20—just as I did—appearing in New York theatrical productions and live broadcasts during television’s Golden Age. She went on to become an Academy Award–winning actress, a Hollywood icon, and later, the beloved Princess of Monaco. Ranked 13th among the American Film Institute’s 25 Greatest Female Stars of Classical Hollywood Cinema, her life continues to inspire generations of artists.

The Princess Grace Foundation was established to carry forward her vision, uplifting creative innovators across disciplines—actors, directors, designers, playwrights, choreographers, filmmakers, dancers, and other performance artists. Recipients of the Princess Grace Awards represent some of the most inspiring figures in the performing arts, many of whom have gone on to earn the world’s highest honors, from Oscars and Tonys to MacArthur Genius Grants and Pulitzer Prizes.

To stand among this lineage—recognized by the Princess Grace Foundation—is an honor beyond measure. I carry their belief in me as both a gift and a responsibility: to continue shaping the creative cultcural landscape with authenticity, creativity, and excellence.

Another cornerstone of my journey was being awarded a full scholarship to the Paper Mill Playhouse’s Performing Arts Conservatory.

This conservatory was more than a training program—it was a transformative experience that demanded not only artistic excellence but also discipline, resilience, and professionalism. Every day, under the guidance of industry leaders, was a masterclass in acting, auditioning, vocal technique, and dance. The process was rigorous, yet profoundly rewarding.

The program culminated in the Annual New Voices Concert—a celebration of passion, growth, and artistry. This showcase was not just a performance, but a living testament to the dedication of every young performer whose heart beats for the stage.

Following more than 15 years of training, I embarked on the next chapter of my artistic journey at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, the oldest acting school in the English-speaking world (est. 1884). AADA is a place where tradition meets innovation, and where artists from around the globe come together to hone their craft in a community built on rigor, respect, and creativity.

During my time there, supported by the Princess Grace Foundation Scholarship, I immersed myself fully in advanced performance techniques and classical training, studying disciplines such as:

  • Advanced Acting Styles

  • Acting for the Stage

  • Shakespeare & Greek Theater

  • Theater History

  • Makeup for the Stage

  • Directed Acting Study

  • Classic Voice & Speech

  • Fencing

  • Meisner Technique

  • Method Acting

  • Advanced Musical Theater

  • Movement for the Stage

  • Uta Hagen Technique

These studies refined not only my artistry, but also my humanity. The Academy’s training demanded honesty, discipline, and vulnerability—qualities that have shaped me for a lifetime, both on stage and off.

I am honored to be among its alumni, joining the ranks of renowned actors such as:

  • Anne Hathaway

  • Danny DeVito

  • Robert Redford

  • Grace Kelly

  • Adrien Brody

  • Kim Cattrall

  • Jennifer Coolidge

  • Dennis Haysbert

…and many more.

Collectively, AADA alumni have earned 112 Oscars, 359 Emmys, and 102 Tony Awards and nominations—a testament to the Academy’s lasting influence. To be part of this lineage is not only an honor, but a calling—to uphold the standards of artistry that the Academy represents.
